If you’re looking for a delicious gluten-free afternoon tea experience in San Diego, look no further! I’ve compiled a list of the five best venues in the city, all offering unique and memorable tea experiences. As someone who has enjoyed afternoon tea in places like London, NYC, and Dallas before going gluten-free, my expectations are pretty high—so you can trust these recommendations!

However, each of these venues offers a unique and memorable tea experience, so be sure to check them all out!

1. Aubrey Rose Tea Room in La Mesa

Aubrey Rose Tea Room

Nestled in La Mesa, the Aubrey Rose Tea Room offers a cozy and traditional afternoon tea service, featuring finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, and, of course, unlimited tea. They can accommodate several dietary restrictions (with a reservation) including:

  • Gluten-free ($3 extra)
  • Vegetarian
  • Nut-free

Aubrey Rose’s gluten-free service is top-notch, offering a complete experience with gluten-free scones, savories, and desserts. The customer service is always pleasant, and I’ve enjoyed visiting for solo self-care. For reservations and hours, visit their website.

2. Brittania Tea Rooms

Brittania Tea Room, located close to Point Loma, adds a fun twist to traditional afternoon tea with its themed events, such as Downton Abbey, Bridgerton, and Harry Potter-themed teas. You can check out their events here. Since these events fill up fast, I recommend booking well in advance. They are closed on Thursdays.

They accommodate the following dietary restrictions:

  • Vegan
  • Gluten-free ($2 extra)
  • Vegetarian

Gluten-Free and Vegan must be booked or requested by 6:00pm the day before. Otherwise, they accept same-day reservations. They have friendly customer service and a delicious spread of deserts, an exceptional selection of teas, and a wonderful environment. For more information on how to reserve, visit their website.

The Westgate Hotel

Westgate hotel afternoon tea

For a more luxurious experience, The Westgate Hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter offers a traditional afternoon tea service with a gluten-free option. Their selection of organic teas is small but lovely, and reservations can be made online or by phone here.

However, while their organic teas were delightful, I was disappointed that scones were replaced with fruit. As a big fan of scones, this was a letdown for me. Additionally, they didn’t use warmers for the tea pots, so the tea cooled down quickly. Overall, I’d rate the experience 3.5/5 but would consider returning if they offered a complete gluten-free menu. Check their website for reservation details.

The Grand Tea Room in Escondido

The Grand Tea Room afternoon tea

Tucked away in Escondido, The Grand Tea Room offers a fantastic gluten-free tea service. With more than 30 teas to choose from, their afternoon tea includes bottomless tea and a full gluten-free menu. The service and food quality are excellent, and I’d give them a solid 4/5.

The Coral Tree Tea House in Old Town Mexico

Located in Heritage County Park in Old Town, the Coral Tree Tea House is a charming venue set in a historic home built in the 1800s. Their gluten-free option is available for an additional $10 and features a variety of house-made treats and a traditional afternoon tea experience. The experience feels uniquely authentic, thanks to the historic setting and freshly prepared menu.

Reservations for gluten-free service must be made 48 hours in advance, and booking is done over the phone by calling (619) 291-5464. Free parking is available on-site, making it a convenient stop for your next afternoon tea outing.
